The Peavey EVH Wolfgangguitar series is the result of the collaboration between guitarist Edward Van Halen and Hartley Peavey's company, Peavey Electronics.

The EVH stands for 'Edward Van Halen' while Wolfgang is the name of Edward Van Halen's son (born in 1991).

History[edit]

Since the late 1970s, when Van Halen regularly performed on the Pasadena club scene, and with the release of Van Halen's self-titled debut album, Edward Van Halen's guitar tone—nicknamed the 'Brown Sound' for being full yet distinctively aggressive and articulate—had been widely acclaimed. It immediately set a standard for guitarists all over the world.

To achieve the legendary 'Brown Sound', Edward Van Halen employed a variac to limit the voltage of his Marshall guitar amplifier while still allowing the volume to be at its maximum. He also used a custom-assembled strat-like guitar with a PAFhumbucker (taken from a Gibson ES-335) mounted directly to the guitar's body. Van Halen's infamous Frankenstein (a.k.a. the 'Frankenstrat') guitar laid the groundwork for most of the custom guitars he played throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Prior to working with Peavey, Van Halen had worked with and endorsed Charvel, Kramer and Ernie Ball Music Man.

Production of the Peavey EVH Wolfgang began in late 1996 (after a year-long development process) and lasted until 2004, when Edward Van Halen and Peavey parted amicably.^[2] Production of the Wolfgang guitar (along with other Peavey models) occurred in a dedicated Leakesville, MS plant but was moved to Meridian, MS in early 2003. Van Halen had also developed three amplifiers with Peavey, starting in 1991.

In 2009, Edward Van Halen announced the release of a new Wolfgang guitar built by Fender but only carrying his own 'EVH' brand label. The newer Wolfgang retains many of exactly the same attributes as its Peavey-built predecessor.

Models and specification[edit]

In some sense, the Peavey EVH Wolfgang guitar picked up where the Ernie Ball Music Man EVH model left off, with the prototype design being made by Peavey Design Engineer/Luthier Jim DeCola (an amber quilted top model which still didn't have the Wolfgang headstock shape, but rather a Peavey classic one). On the second prototype, DeCola then developed the final body and headstock designs. Another innovative feature DeCola designed was the recessed truss rod adjustment wheel. Recessing the adjustment wheel into the neck provided a stronger neck joint as well as ease of adjustment like his previous model. This design has since been adopted by Fender, Jackson, Charvel, ESP, Schecter, and many other brands. The body was made of basswood and often had (like its predecessor) a maple cap. This combination is considered by some, such as renowned luthier John Suhr, 'the Holy Grail of tone.'^[3] The Ernie Ball model, however, used a 1/8' figured maple cap, which is itself less likely to change the overall effect of the tonewood. Peavey Wolfgangs had maple caps ranging from 1/4' to 5/8'.The guitar had a Floyd Rosevibrato system, built by Ping, which lowers pitch only (like the Ernie Ball Music Man EVH model) but added a d-Tuna on the low E-string, a device that allowed that string to be instantly tuned to and from D (a former design of this device, named 'The Willie',^[4] was filed for patent by Edward in 1997, but later abandoned in 1998).

Many Peavey Wolfgang owners have incorrectly adopted the terms 'Standard' and 'Deluxe' and applied them to their guitars. Though common, these terms were never officially used by Peavey. Wolfgang owners were simply seeking a way to distinguish between arch top and flat top model Wolfgangs and maple cap and solid basswood model Wolfgangs. The word 'Deluxe' was used by Peavey, but only to describe Custom Shop models.

Although we have tested this software on our Windows7/10 environments and haven't experienced any serious accident during the operation, we are not responsible of any.

Alinco DR-135TP Setup for APRS

The Alinco DR-135TP is an economical space saving device for use with APRS or packet. It combines a VHF 2m radio with an internal TNC. It doesn't support all of the commands as a regular TNC but what is there is adequate for APRS and light packet use. Reportedly there are issues using KISS mode but that is an option I didn't try. This radio can also be had in 220Mhz (DR-135T) and 440Mhz (DR-435T) flavors. Both of which will take the Internal EJ-41U TNC board.

I have used the Alinco as a standalone tracker in my truck with excellent results. I have also used it in the house as a base station with UI-VIEW32 software and had no problems whatsoever. The setup info for both applications can be found below. You can also download my DR135 command files for use with UI-VIEW32. One will be for base or mobile applications. This will allow you to switch from base to mobile and back without having to manually enter commands into the TNC. UI-VIEW32 will do it all for you. The other will allow you to use the Alinco and UI-VIEW together while mobile.

Alinco to computer communications

I use Hyperterminal to communicate with the Alinco's built in TNC.

Hyperterminal should be on your system already if you are using windows. Start Hyperterminal. On my system this is done by clicking Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Hyperterminal -> Hyperterminal.exe

Click on File then New Connection.
The Connection Description dialogue will pop-up. Enter DR135TP and choose an icon. when done click OK.
Now you will see the Connect To dialogue. Choose 'Direct to Com1' or whatever Com port you will be using. Click OK
You can now enter the connection properties. Choose the options listed below and click OK.
Bits Per Second: 9600
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow Control: Xon/Xoff
You should now see a blank terminal window with a cusor blinking in the upper left. Turn your Alinco on and put it into data mode. You will see the TNCs message flash on the screen. The commands you need to enter are below. When done Close Hyperterminal. You will be asked if you are sure you want to disconnect. Choose Yes. You will also be asked to save the DR135TP file. Choose yes. That way you only have to double click the DR135TP.ht file next time instead of going through the whole setup process again. You should now be all set. Go drive around and see how it works.

UI-VIEW32 Setup

You will need to create a command file or edit one of the current ones. I copied the TNC2 file and deleted the commands that don't purtain to the DR-135TP. I saved it as DR135.CMD. You can download mine here.This file will allow UI-VIEW32 to use the internal TNC for base and mobile setups. When you exit UI-VIEW32 it will program the TNC to act as a standalone tracker. You will need to edit it for your symbol and digi path. This is what your command file should look like

Setup UI-VIEW32 as you would for a normal base setup. Enter your Lat/Long for your QTH. Enter your digi path in the uproto address area. For the Beacon Interval you can set it to beacon at set minute intervals or by mileage. Select the Icon you want to use under GPS Symbol.

Next go to GPS setup and chose the same Com port the radio is using. Make sure 'GPS Enabled' is selected and then click the 'Shared Port Setup' button. Select 'TH-D7' and click OK.

Now when UI-VIEW32 recieves GPS data it will switch to mobile mode. You can monitor the GPS data by going to Action -> ShowGPS Input.

If you are an experienced musician, you probably are already familiar with the Nashville Number System or have at least heard of it. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it is definitely a useful system to know.
The Nashville Number System (also just called the number system) is a way of writing the chords to a song in a 'universal' or neutral key using numbers instead of chord names. This way the song can be played in any key at any time with out rewriting it.
How It Works
The poor bastard was an egghead who knew a lot about music but never took the time to learn the down-and-dirty stuff that working musicians use every day: the Nashville Number System. Literally, everybody working a decent gig in Nashville reads number charts—including every good engineer and drummer, even though they're not playing notes, per se. So why is this useful?

Now you're probably asking, 'Why would I take the time to do this?' The answer is simple: because everybody in the music industry uses the Nashville Number System. You know, 'when in Rome'? In fact, most Pros and good amateurs will usually assume you already know how to use it.
But WHY does everyone use it? When you write out a song in numeric notation like this, the numbers can be applied to any key. So this example can now be translated to C instantly:
1 = C
♭7 = B♭
4 = F
1 = C
2 = D
5 = G
1 = C
1 = C
But what if you're in the studio and the lead singer says 'It's a little too low, let's go to D.' Easy. Use the formula:

'Still too low. E♭?' Not a problem.
E♭ D♭ A♭ E♭ F B♭ E♭ E♭
Obviously you wouldn't be rewriting this every time. The more you use this and the more familiar you are with your scales, the less you have to think about it. '1 4 5 in D? Easy, that's D G & A.'
Now SOMEONE out there is asking 'Couldn't I just transpose it from key to key without this?' Yes. Technically you could transpose it from A to E♭. 'So you'd measure the distance from A to E♭, which is 6 half steps. So then your next chord is G, so six half steps from G is.. oh yeah D♭. So now, six half steps from D is.. uhh A♭. And then six half steps from A again is uh.' ZZZZzzzzz.. ZZZZZzzzzz..
Or you could just start on E♭ and use the same numbers you already had. See why we use it now?
If this still seems a little hard at first, just trust me. When you learn your scales and numbers, it is a bazillion times easier than the other way. And THAT is why everyone uses the Nashville Number System.

The Nashville Number System
Ok, I first have to thank you for suffering through the last post. Those basic pieces of information are extremely important for growing as a guitarist. Now let’s get down and dirty with applying it. First, let’s look again at the C major scale.

You’ll remember that there are seven notes in the scale, so we’re going to show all the notes below and number them 1-7, starting with C (C is equal to 1, D is equal to 2, etc.):
Pay careful attention to the numbers above each note, because they’re very important. Those numbers show the relationship of notes (and also chords) to one another. Working with the notes, there are a couple that have special importance. Obviously, 1 or C is important… in music terms, it’s called the “tonic.” Also, 5 or G is big, and it is called the “dominant.” note or chord. 4 or F has the name of “subdominant”, and 6 minor or A minor is called the “relative minor.” Some songs also include the 2 minor chord, (D minor) too. These five chords are very important in worship music, I’d go as far as saying that 80 percent of all worship songs contain only these chords or some variation of them. Now why are we mentioning the numbers 1,2,4,5 and 6, instead of just the chord names? The reason is the numbers show us the relationship between the notes and chords that are important to us. These numbers (and ultimately the relationship they show) have a name in music circles. They’re called the Nashville Number System. Confused? Well, it’s real easy.
Imagine having a chord chart in front of you of a song in the key of C… it repeats the chords C, Am, G, and F over and over. (ex. the verses to Katheryn Scott’s song “Hungry” follow this progression) Now say your worship leader comes to you and says he or she would rather do the song in the key of D. If you didn’t know the relationship between the chords, you might be lost. But being the observant guitar player you are, you know that there is a relationship between the chords that stays the same, no matter what key you play in. So you put on a Sherlock Holmes hat, and go back to the C major chart above to determine which numbers match the chords. Thus:
C=1
Am=6m
G=5
F=4
The relationship of the chords in the song is 1 – 6m – 5 – 4 repeated over and over. Now we have to determine how to change or in musical terms “transpose” the song into the key of D. If you remember in part one, we found the relationship between notes on the major scale to be
2 – 2 – 1 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 1
So let’s go back to the Chromatic Scale chart, and apply these starting with D.
Since our chord progression goes 1 – 6m – 5 – 4, then we know the new chords for playing the song will be:
D – Bm – A – G

No matter what key you play a song in, the relationship is always the same, so the Nashville Number System gives us a way to communicate that relationship no matter what key we’re playing in.

Now that we’ve done all the hard thinking, I’ll make things real easy for you. Below is a chart of the five important Nashville Number chords, and their corresponding chords in the keys of C, A, G, E, and D… something otherwise known as the CAGED principle for guitarists.
Why CAGED?: The reason the chords in the keys of C, A, G, E, and D are so important is that they’re the major open root position keys available for guitarists. By knowing all these chords, you can play a song in any key, just by capoing. For example, say a song is in A# (B flat) you could capo on the first fret, and play the A position chords, or capo on the third fret and play G position chord

Getting the trumpet to consistently do what you want it to do is a lifelong process, and there are many legitimate ways to approach playing the horn. Like most trumpet players, I use concepts from several different schools of thought in my own playing, but one of the people from whom I’ve borrowed the most is James Stamp. I’ve recently developed a practice tool that has helped me do a better job of putting a couple of his ideas into practice, and I’d like to share it here (more on that in a minute).
James Stamp was one of the most influential brass teachers of the 20th century, and his approach to the trumpet has only become more popular since his passing in 1985. You can’t swing a cat without hitting a trumpet player who uses a Stamp exercise or idea in their playing, and what’s really interesting to me is that players of every stripe seem to like Stamp.
Håkan Hardenberger is a fan, (see Mark Dulin’s great January 2009 ITG Journal Interview), but so is Wayne Bergeron (see Derek Reaban’s write up of a 2008 Bergeron masterclass). I don’t know about you, but as a trumpet player who strives for proficiency in all types of playing, hearing two names as different as those attached to the same set of ideas perks my ears up.
Most of us know James Stamp’s method book Warm-ups and Studies as well as the book’s ubiquitous “Basic Warm-up #3” (if you don’t know “Basic Warm-up #3,” ask my wife how it goes. It gets stuck in her head like a Disney song).
As I see it, the backbone of Stamp’s philosophy to remain centered at all times, and the specific techniques in Warm-ups and Studies reinforce this philosophy, especially this one from page four:
Keep thinking down going up and thinking up going down.
I had an “A-ha!” moment a couple of years ago while reading Craig Morris’ excellent series of blog posts Stamping It Out. In particular, this excerpt caught my attention (from the second post in the series):
Imagine that you are playing facing a tall brick wall (if you have an actual brick wall, that will be even better). Assign each brick its own unique note. The top brick on the wall is pedal C; the bottom brick is however high you are able to play; Bb, C, or A should be right in the middle. Before you play any note, find its location on the brick wall, and then place the note there when you play. Thinking in this manner improves three things: 1) As mentioned in the book, it helps to keep you from playing sharp in the upper register and flat in the lower register. 2) It keeps you balanced when you play, preventing you from puckering out too much when you are in the lower register, and from stretching too much when you are in the upper register. 3) It gives you a more concrete placement of each note before you play it. When playing the trumpet, we have almost no visual feedback or guidance. If you play the piano, you know where every note is; they are all laid out in front of you. The same thing is true of string instruments, albeit to a lesser degree. With the trumpet, however, we have almost no visual help. But if you visualize the place each note resides on your virtual (or hopefully real) brick wall, then it will reinforce to your body where each note goes, and what is involved in placing it there.

Like most players, I struggle with over-tightening in the upper register and over-loosening the chops below low C, so this approach was just what I needed.
I used this concept in the abstract until fairly recently, when I decided to experiment with an artificial “brick wall,” so to speak. Meet my latest (and nerdiest) creation: the Stamp Strip!
The basic idea is similar to what Craig Morris outlines above, but I’ve given each “brick” its own printed note name. While playing Stamp, scales, flow studies and the like, I associate each note I play with the printed note on the strip. Using this tool keep my high register feeling easier and more accessible and my low register less tubby. I’ve noticed a big improvement in ease of playing as well as smoothness of slurs.

Nothing is more precisely measured than time!
And nothing keeps track of time more precisely and trouble free than our radio controlled clocks. Since the beginning of time, man has been fascinated with the measurement of time and has devised more accurate machines to trap and measure time. Today, time is precisely measured in the United States by the most accurate clock in North America, the Atomic Clock of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, Time and Frequency Division in Boulder, Colorado. A team of atomic physicists continually measures every second of every day to an accuracy of ten billionths of a second per day. These physicists have created an international standard, measuring a second as 9,192,631,770 vibrations of a Cesium 133 atom in a vacuum. This atomic clock regulates the WWVB radio transmitter located in Fort Collins, Colorado, where the exact time signal is continuously broadcast throughout the United States at 60 kHz to take advantage of stable long wave radio paths found in that frequency range. Radio waves at these low frequencies use the earth and the ionosphere as a wave-guide and follow the curvature of the earth for long distances.
The built in antenna system will receive the WWVB signal anywhere in North America within 2000 miles of Fort Collins where long-wave radio reception is undisturbed. A microprocessor activates the receiver and processes the time signal from Fort Collins overnight.
Through the radio signals, our radio controlled clocks always keep precise time. The changeover from standard time to daylight savings time, and vice versa, takes place automatically with the same precision.
Additional details
To set up your clock simply install one fresh AA, LR6 ALKALINE battery. Due to the nature of long wave radio signals it is normally not possible to receive a signal during the day so it is best to install the battery late in the evening. Select your time zone by pressing one of the four time zone buttons PT-Pacific Time, MT-Mountain Time, CT-Central Time, ET-Eastern Time. The time zone buttons may be pressed any time after installing the batteries. If multiple buttons are pressed the clock will set to the time zone selected last. If no time zone is selected the clock will default to Pacific Time. Another time zone can be selected during or after the clock has set itself. Your clock can only set itself to one of the four time zones stated above. For time zones outside of PT, MT, CT or ET you must manually set the time using the Manual Time set button on the back of the movement.
Daylight Savings Time Adjustment.
If you live in Indiana or Arizona you will wish to disable the DST function. After setting your clock press the small button labeled 'DST' located just above and between the ET and CT Time Zone buttons on the back of the movement. Your clock will no longer observe DST.
Manual Setting
Atomic Clocks may also be set manually and be very accurate. Simply insert the battery, press your time zone and then press the flap just above the left side of the battery. Hold until you reach the correct time and then release. Your clock is now an accurate quartz clock until it will find the signal. Your Atomic clock will still continue to look for the signal and start adjusting itself automatically.
When the battery is installed the second hand will advance eight seconds (two seconds per step x four steps). The clock is now searching for a signal. For the initial setting, it is recommended to stand the clock in an upright position near a window. Within five minutes the clock will either receive the WWVB signal and set itself to the exact time, or it will determine that the signal is not receivable at its current location and time of day. If a signal is not receivable it will fast-forward the hands to the 4, 8, or 12 o’clock position and search for WWVB each hour until a signal is received. If the time is manually set the clock will continue to periodically search for a signal and automatically reset the hands when the signal is received.
Select a location to place your radio controlled clock where it will be at least six feet away from a TV, computer, air conditioner or other household electrical appliances. The optimal location is near a window. Windows facing Colorado providing the best signal. The WWVB time signal will easily penetrate Masonry and wood-framed buildings. WWVB will penetrate almost every residential building and most steel buildings if they have adequate windows. It is not possible, however, for WWVB to penetrate most indoor shopping malls and rooms in the center of large office buildings that do not have windows. In buildings that WWVB cannot penetrate you may set the time using the manual time set button. When the clock is exposed to the WWVB signal it will automatically set the hands to the exact time.
Our Rwave, Atomic, Radio Controlled clocks do not receive or process radio-controlled time signals from Germany’s DCF 77, Japan’s J Ga AS, or England’s MSFs atomically regulated transmitters. Our Radio Controlled clocks can be manually set and used anywhere.
If your clock did not set the first time or after daylight savings time change, try the following instructions:
1) Take out the battery and place the battery in backward for about 10 seconds, then replace it again in the correct position.
2) Just after replacing the battery, press the Time Zone button for about 5 seconds on the back that corresponds with the time zone where you are located.
3) Shortly after the hands should start turning 20 times their normal speed and stop at 4:00 or 8:00 or 12:00. This means the clock is now looking or waiting for the signal and the clock movement is good.
4) Place the clock near a westerly window overnight and then the clock should reset overnight and read the correct time.
**If you had previously pushed the manual mode flap (switch), take a pen or paperclip and make sure it is pulled out in the off position.
If you live in the Eastern Time Zone, you should manually set your clock using the following procedure:
1. Take the battery out of the clock.
2. Press the manual time setting tab on the back of the clock 15 times.
3. Put the battery back into the clock.
4. The clock will go to 4:00, 8:00, or 12:00 and stay there while waiting for the signal.
5. Immediately after your clock stops at 4:00, 8:00, or 12:00, push and hold the manual time set tab until you get to the correct time.
If you release the button at the incorrect time, take the battery out and start again.
These clocks will automatically continue to check and adjust after April 1.
